Needs and Capacities to Exercise for Low-income ElderlNeeds Elderly

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand low-income elderly needs and capacities to exercise to revitalize their physical activities in relation to local visiting healthcare services. Subjects of this study were 183 basic livelihood security services receivers in Seongdong-Gu of Seoul who agreed to be tested their exercise capacities and received visiting services. Information was gathered through interviews and health measurements during visiting services. In result, first, the average value of the subjects¡¯ needs to exercise was 124.77(¡¾38.35). The biggest reason for their needs to exercise included ¡®to maintain strength(4.0).¡¯ Other reasons with lowest scores were ¡®to look good(2.4),¡¯ ¡®to show new looks(2.4),¡¯ and ¡®to be better than others(2.4).¡¯ Second, the number of female subjects with two or more difficulties among eight questions on exercise capacities was almost twice that of male subjects. Both men and women said that ¡®running lapses¡¯ was most difficult, followed by ¡®bending(40.0%),¡¯ ¡®going up stairs(25.7%),¡¯ and ¡®moving heavy goods(20.0%)¡¯ for men and ¡®moving heavy goods(52.6%),¡¯ ¡®going up stairs(51.1%),¡¯ and ¡®bending(41.5%)¡¯ for women. The above results would be contributive to developing individual exercise programs for low-income elderly based on their motivations to exercise and difficulties in exercise capacities.
